Our second day in Amsterdam was spent exploring more of the city center. The sun made only a short appearance, but the weather was much nicer than the day before. Tyler and I always prefer to explore cities at our own leisure instead of trying to hit every major tourist attraction in one day. There are certain things you don’t want to miss out on when traveling, but I think you lose a lot if you spend the majority of your trip waiting in long lines–so we always try to have a balance.

We spent the first part of our day walking around the streets surrounding Begijnhof. Begijnhof itself is a small courtyard lined with historic buildings. It’s hidden from the main road and is such a peaceful place in the midst of a busy city. Here you can find some of the oldest homes in Amsterdam. Of all the beautiful buildings at Begijnhof, “The Wooden House” is the most famous. It dates back to the 15th or 16th century and is one of the only wooden houses left in Amsterdam. After fires destroyed much of the city, people were banned from building houses with wooden sides.

Later we walked along one of the main roads in Amsterdam, Damrak, from Station Centraal towards Dam Square. Every canal in Amsterdam is lined with the most picturesque buildings, but I especially loved the ones along the Damrak Canal! Being able to admire old buildings and beautiful architecture is one of the best parts about being in Europe for me. I have a love for old houses, and being from the Midwest, I’m lucky to see something that dates earlier than the 1900’s. I really admired how the Dutch make great use of natural light as evidenced by the giant windows on every building. It definitely makes up for the gloomy weather–although, I’m sure it’s not always quite as cloudy as it was during our stay 🙂

Once again we found a cozy spot to stop and have an afternoon pick-me-up at Melly’s Cookie Bar. This place was seriously adorable and had delicious little desserts in addition to the good coffee. I was trying to channel summer vibes in this all white outfit, while also staying warm. This long sleeve t-shirt from Madewell was such a great find! It’s super comfortable and feels effortlessly stylish. I ended up giving in later in the day and bought a sweatshirt though because it was SO cold!
